Vienna Metro – Basic Orientation

Vienna has a very good public transport system. The core of the network is the metro (U-Bahn), together with suburban trains (S-Bahn). They are complemented by trams and buses. The metro network consists of 5 lines (U1, U2, U3, U4, and U6 – U5 is missing). Except U6, all lines go through the Inner City. The intervals between trains range from 2 minutes during the peak times to 10 minutes late in the evening.

Most attractions and important buildings are located in or near the Inner City. The most notable exceptions are:

South + West

• Schönbrunn Palace – south-west of the city centre, accessible through metro lines U4 and U6
• Stadthalle – 1 stop from Westbahnhof on U6; west of the Inner City

Northeast + East

• UNO City (United Nations offices) – on the northern side of the Danube River, accessible through metro line U1 (Kaisermühlen Station)
• Prater Amusement Park – next to Praterstern Station (U1, U2), between the Inner City and UNO City
• Messe Wien – convention centre; next to Prater Park; metro line U2
• Ernst-Happel Stadium – after Messe Wien on metro line U2
