Westbahnhof and Praterstern Locations and Connections

Westbahnhof and Praterstern are two of the big railway stations in Vienna. As their names suggest, Westbahnhof is located in the western part of the city (at the crossing of the Gürtel and Mariahilfer Strasse) and Praterstern is located next to the entrance to Prater Amusement Park, which is between Donaukanal (Danube Channel) and the Danube River.

Both are served by U-Bahn (metro) as well as S-Bahn (local train), but it is much more convenient to take the U-Bahn if you want to get from Westbahnhof to Praterstern or the other way.

Getting from Westbahnhof to Praterstern by U-Bahn

There is no direct connection between Westbahnhof and Praterstern, so you will have to change trains once.

Westbahnhof is the interchange of U-Bahn lines U3 and U6.

Praterstern is the interchange of U-Bahn lines U1 and U2.

When going from Westbahnhof, take line U3 in direction to the city centre (Simmering). Then you have two options, which are both about equally fast:

Either get off the U3 at Volkstheater (3 stops from Westbahnhof) and change to line U2 in direction to Stadion and Aspernstrasse. It is 5 stops from Volkstheater to Praterstern, 8 in total.

Alternatively, get off the U3 at Stephansplatz (5 stops from Westbahnhof) and change to line U1 in direction to Leopoldau. Praterstern is 3 stops from Stephansplatz, which makes the whole journey also 8 stops.

Things to See near Volkstheater and Stephansplatz

If you have extra time, both the transfer stations are attractive locations in case that you want to explore Vienna Inner City a bit. Volkstheater is close to the Museum Quarter, the Imperial Palace, City Hall, and several other landmarks. Stephansplatz Station is directly under the Stephansdom (Vienna Cathedral) and at the intersection of popular shopping streets Kärntner Strasse and Graben. It is also within walking distance from Vienna Imperial Palace (the inner city is quite small).
