During the summer holiday in July and August 2012 there is the “U1 Modernisierung” (U1 modernization) going on in Vienna. U1 is the line number 1 of Viennese metro (U-Bahn) and a very important component of Viennese public transport system.
From 7 July to 26 August 2012
According to Wiener Linien, the modernization works were scheduled to summer because there is about 25% less passenger traffic during this time (although the tourists won’t appreciate the timing very much).
From Schwedenplatz to Reumannplatz – the southern half of U1, including the stations in the Inner City.
The northern part from Schwedenplatz to Leopoldau (including Praterstern or UNO City) is operating.
Replacement services are called Ersatzverkehr in German.
Between Favoriten and the Inner City there are temporary tram services number 66 and 68 during the U1 closure.
Regular lines number 6 and 14A have increased capacity during the U1 closure.
If you are travelling between the northern (operating) section of U1 and Karlsplatz, it is recommended to use the other U-Bahn lines (U2 or U4) or S-Bahn if you go further south.
You can find more details (and the countdown to U1 re-opening) on the official website of Wiener Linien: www.wienerlinien.at
