The long tradition of summer film festivals in front of Vienna City Hall (Rathaus) continues with its 21st season in 2011. As in the past years, Vienna Rathaus Film Festival will take place at Rathausplatz in front of the city hall (with a giant screen installed directly on the front wall of the Rathaus).
Rathaus Film Festival is one of the most popular events taking place in Vienna annually. According to estimates, about 700,000 visitors have attended the festival in each of the last years.
Many different styles and genres are represented at Rathaus Film Festival each summer. You will see and hear classical music, some of world’s best known operas (often is less traditional form), ballet, theatre, but also rock, pop, and other kinds of modern music. One of the best things about Vienna Rathaus Film Festival is that is makes sometimes totally different genres meet one another and win new fans. Many of festival visitors in the past said that they discovered something totally new and started to like some kinds of music they had never noticed before.
Rathaus Film Festival is not only about culture, but also about good (and often exotic) food. Every summer there are many food stands and open air restaurants at Rathausplatz. They are open every day approximately from 11 am until late evening (when the film festival performances end).
2nd July to 4th September 2011
The film always begins as it gets dark. Exact times will vary (the films will start earlier towards the end of summer, as it gets dark earlier).
The entrance to Rathaus Film Festival is free. The food, of course, is not.
There are several U-Bahn (metro) stations within easy walking distance from Rathausplatz. The nearest stations are Rathaus (line U2) and Volkstheater (lines U2 and U3).
