Westbahnhof Station in Vienna
Vienna West Train Station
Wien Westbahnhof Station (Train Station Vienna West) is one of the largest train stations in Vienna. It is the starting point of the Austrian Westbahn, railway corridor which runs from Vienna to the West to destinations like Salzburg, Munich, Zürich, or Frankfurt.
Westbahnhof is situated to the west-southwest from Vienna city centre, approximately halfway between the Imperial Palace Hofburg and Schönbrunn Palace.
Westbahnhof Station Coverage and Trains
The list of train destinations covered by Westbahnhof is very long and it is not limited to cities located to the west of Vienna (for example there are trains to Budapest or Beograd departing from Westbahnhof).
Besides long-distance trains connecting Vienna with European capitals, Westbahnhof serves a lot of local train routes, including S-Bahn line S50.
Westbahnhof Station Public Transport Access
Westbahnhof has an excellent public transport coverage. It is the intersection of two metro lines: U3 between Simmering (also a train station) and Ottakring and U6 between Floridsdorf and Siebenhirten. The U-Bahn station at Westbahnhof is very large itself, with many little shops and stands.
The metro, called U-Bahn in Vienna, operates daily between early morning and a little over midnight. Intervals between trains are between 2 and 10 minutes, depending on the time of day. Besides the metro there are several tram and bus lines at Westbahnhof.
Getting from Westbahnhof to Vienna City Centre
Metro line U3 is the fastest way to get from Westbahnhof Station to the city centre. It takes 3-5 stops and less than 10 minutes to most of the landmarks like the Imperial Palace Hofburg or St. Stephen’s Cathedral.
If you have a lot of time, you can walk down the famous shopping street Mariahilfer Strasse, which connects Westbahnhof with MuseumsQuartier and the Imperial Palace. The walk takes about 30 minutes.
