Another season’s highlight: 21 January at Musikverein

Vienna New Year Concert 2010 was again huge success, such that Wiener Philharmoniker website had trouble handling the traffic in the first days of the year. Vienna Philharmonic comes back into the spotlight again soon. On 21 January 2010 Vienna Philharmonic Ball takes place at the Musikverein (same venue as the New Year Concert). Like the Neujahrskonzert, the Philharmonic Ball is traditionally one of the highlights of Viennese season. Honorary Patron of the ball is the President of Austria Dr. Heinz Fischer.

The orchestra dancing, not playing the music

At the ball however the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra members are not the ones playing the music. You will hear them playing only at the opening ceremony (with conductor Christoph Eschenbach). As usual Vienna Philharmonic Ball opening will show the procession and dance of the young ladies and gentlemen (prepared by the Elmayer School of Dance; director Thomas Schäfer-Elmayer).

Then for the rest of the evening, music will be played by Grosses Ballorchester (conductor Helmut Steubl) and Axel Rot Orchester. The philharmonic orchestra members take the dance floor instead.
