St. Stephen’s Cathedral, better known as Stephansdom or Steffl, is one of the tallest buildings (its South Tower is 137 metres high) and top landmarks in Vienna. It is located at Stephansplatz, in the middle of Vienna’s 1st district, Innere Stadt.
The tall tower you can see in the middle of the picture is the tower of Vienna City Hall, or Rathaus. There are amazing views of Vienna in all directions from the South Tower of Stephansdom. Here you can read more about climbing on Stephansdom South Tower.
There are many hotels near Stephansdom. Most typically they are 4 star hotels in historical buildings, but you can also find many 5 star hotels (try Kärntner Strasse, Vienna State Opera, or the area near the Imperial Palace Hofburg) and 3 star hotels.
The metro (U-Bahn) station located directly next to Stephansdom is Stephansplatz Station, served by lines U1 and U3. There are no trams and very few bus services, because this part of Vienna city centre is mostly a pedestrian zone – the U-Bahn is by far the best transportation option. However, it is easy to walk from Stephansdom to most other landmarks and places in Vienna Inner City.
