New Year’s Concert by Vienna Philharmonic

Franz Welser-Möst the 6th Austrian conductor of the Neujahrskonzert

In 2011 the New Year’s Concert will be conducted by Franz Welser-Möst, who will become the 6th Austrian conductor to conduct the Neujahrskonzert (after Clemens Krauss, Josef Krips, Willi Boskovsky, Herbert von Karajan, and Nikolaus Harnoncourt).

Franz Leopold Maria Möst is originally from Linz, Austria and Welser-Möst is his stage name. During his career he has conducted some of the world’s most prestigious orchestras including the London Philharmonic, Zurich Opera House orchestra, and several orchestras in the US (St. Louis, Atlanta, Boston, New York, and Chicago). At present Franz Welser-Möst is the conductor of Cleveland Orchestra in the US.

Since September 2010 Franz Welser-Möst has been the Musical Director (Generalmusikdirektor) of the Vienna State Opera. In the season 2010/11 Franz Welser-Möst he is set to conduct several operas at Vienna State Opera.

As usual, the Strauss dynasty will represent the majority of the Neujahrskonzert’s program. Besides Johann Strauss I., Johann Strauss II., and Josef Strauss, you will hear the works of Josef Lanner (Die Schönbrunner), Franz Liszt (Mephisto-Walzer I), and Joseph Hellmesberger (Zigeunertanz from The Pearl of Iberia).

The New Year’s Concert 2011 takes place in Vienna Musikverein building and is scheduled to start  at 11:15 CET on 1 January 2011. You can see the detailed program on the official website of Wiener Philharmoniker.
