The building of Vienna City Hall (or Rathaus in German) is situated at Rathausplatz (City Hall Square) in the western part of Vienna Inner City. The area around Rathaus is one of the best places to stay in Vienna, because it is very close to most of the landmarks and tourist attractions in the city. Rathausplatz and Rathauspark (the area in front of the City Hall) are particularly lively and interesting in summer, where the Film Festival takes place here, and in December – the image of the illuminated Rathaus is one of the symbols of Vienna Christmas Markets. The U-Bahn station closest to Vienna City Hall is Rathaus Station on line U2.
The number of hotels near Rathaus is high. You can choose from a wide range or locations, styles, and prices, although, given the prestigious address, hotels on the upper end of the spectrum prevail – mostly 4 star and 5 star hotels, with a few 3 star hotels located in the streets behind the City Hall between Landesgerichtsstrasse, Alser Strasse, and Josefstädter Strasse.
Vienna Inner City is in fact one large hotel district and there are many other locations besides Rathaus which offer good accommodation options. Popular hotel areas near Rathaus include the surroundings of the Imperial Palace Hofburg, Maria-Theresien-Platz, the area around Volkstheater Station, or Schottenring. Many hotels in Vienna are often fully booked long in advance. In case of the hotels near Vienna City Hall, demand is particularly high during the Christmas Markets (from end of November until Christmas and New Year) and Rathaus Film Festival (the whole July, August, and in some years also the beginning of September). Book accommodation early, especially if you are not flexible with dates of your stay in Vienna.
