Alte Donau means Old Danube. It is a section of past Danube river branch, which has been separated from today’s Danube by a dam and now serves mainly as a recreational area. Alte Donau station on U-Bahn line U1 is located at Wagramer Strasse at the bank of Alte Donau (the bank closer to city centre). Other important streets and places near Alte Donau Station include Arbeiterstrandbadstrasse, Fischerstrand, and Donaucity Sports Centre. Alte Donau Station is situated near the east end of the large Donaupark (the park with the Danube Tower).
Alte Donau is located away from the city centre, though the connection by metro line U1 is fast and frequent. There are much less accommodation facilities in this area, but you will find several good 3 star and 4 star hotels close to Alte Donau Station. For other hotel categories (5 star hotels, hostels, budget hotels), see other locations below.
The next station after Alte Donau in the city centre direction is Kaisermühlen/VIC Station, the station which serves Vienna International Centre (United Nations office complex). If you cross the river to the city centre, a good accommodation location is Praterstern Station (4 stops from Alte Donau Station), a big railway station and U-Bahn junction located near the entrance of Prater Amusement Park. In Innere Stadt (Inner City – the 1st district), you can find many hotels near Schwedenplatz, Stephansplatz, or Karlsplatz Station (6, 7, and 8 stops from Alte Donau, respectively).
It is recommended to book your hotel well in advance, especially when you are coming in the peak summer season, around Christmas and other public holidays and events. Most Vienna hotels allow free booking cancellations or changes up to a few days before arrival.
You can sort or filter the hotel search results by various criteria, such as price, star count, guest review rating, hotel facilities (e.g. internet or parking), or distance form a place you specify (e.g. Alte Donau Station).
