The tradition of Viennese Christmas markets

German speaking countries have a long tradition of Christmas markets. German and Austrian cities get special decoration in the autumn and people gather in the streets to enjoy the pre-Christmas atmosphere, drink, eat, shop, and have fun. These are the things you can do at Vienna Christmas markets.

Vienna Christmas market dates

Christmas markets take place between the middle of November (the exact date varies a little across markets) and Christmas – officially the last day is the 23th or 24th December.

The period during the Christmas markets is one of the peak periods for Viennese tourism. Many hotels, especially those near the most popular Christmas market sites, are fully booked. If you want to come to Vienna, book your hotel now, before it’s too late.

Rathaus Christkindlmarkt

The best known Christmas market in Vienna is the Christkindlmarkt in front of the Rathaus (city hall). While it is very popular with the locals, it has also become a big tourist attraction in the last years and is visited by thousands of people from abroad. Unfortunately, this fact has negatively affected the quality and originality of things sold at some of the stands. The food, drinks, and the atmosphere are more than fine though and you can always visit some of the smaller markets as well if you want to find the true gems to bring home.
